Awadhi


          


Awadhi is one of the seven dialects spoken in Uttar Pradesh. The term Awadhi comes from a city named Awadh (Ayodhaya in present day). In hindu mythology, Rama who is one of the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu was said to live here. Hymns and prayers dedicated to Rama are mainly written in Awadhi .



Literature in Awadhi



Goswami Tulsidas is one of the most famous Awdhi poets. His most famous work is Ramcharitmanas. Ramcharitmanas was the Awadhi translation of the original Ramayana which was written by Valmiki in Sanskrit. His literature is still recited even after so many years. Some other Awadhi poets are Malik Muhammad Jayasi, Ramai Kaka, Narottama Das etc.



Countries in which Awadhi is spoken

Beside India, Awadhi is spoken in Nepal, Fiji and some of the Caribbean countries.
