Classical Dance Forms of India
India is a country of culture and tradition. In all the years India has experienced, so many dance forms have been made and practiced. In this article, we will discuss about some of those classical Dance Forms.
1. Bharatnatyam
Bharatnatyam is one of the major Indian Classical Dance Forms. It was originated in Tamil Nadu and is estimated to be over 2000 years old. Many of the ancient sources like books and scriptures mention Bharatnatyam. The foundations of Bharatnatyam are found in Natya Shastra, a book written by priest Bharat .
2. Kathak
Kathak was originated in Uttar Pradesh. The term Kathak is derived from the word Katha, which means story. The reason for such name is that the dancers narrate stories through their expressions and eyes. The origins of Kathak date back to 4th century B.C. but it was heavily popularised during Delhi Sultanate period.
3. Kathakali
Kathakali was originated in Kerala. The literal meaning of Kathakali is 'story-play'. The dancers traditionally wear heavy and colourful make-up and costumes. It is mainly performed by male dancers. It is estimated to be originated between 16th to 17th century.
4. Kuchipudi
Kuchipudi was originated in a village named Kuchipudi in Andhra Pradesh. Kuchipudi was traditionally performed by mens but in today's time everyone despite thier gender can perform Kuchipudi .
5.Manipuri
As the name suggests, Manipuri was originated in Manipur. Manipuri is also known as Manipuri Raas Leela. Radha and Krishna are the central theme of this dance.
